I've joined my school's T&F team every single year so far in high school. This year I wanted to practice some sports photography while I was waiting around for my events to start. Here are the photos I took during the first competition.
2025. 03. 09.
This year my goals were to get under 2:35 for 800m and under 6 minutes for 1600m. This wasn't the day I was going to achieve them. I injured my foot, so the jumping events I got placed in were instantly out of the question. For the running events I pushed though and I got a 2:55 for 800m and 6:30 for 1600m. Let's just end this section here.
It was surprisingly pleasant to photograph the event. I brought my camera as well as two lenses, one of them being the 55-250 Canon lens that I used for 99% of the sport photos. There was plenty of light around for high shutter speeds. For the majority of the shots I was in the infield, taking photos of people passing by or of the jumpers doing high jump. I didn't get any photos of long jump, as it was on the other side of the field.
I split this page into different sections based on what event type was being photographed. You can click on the photos for more info on the event as well as who was being photographed. If you want higher resolution JPEGs of a photo, contact me on my Instagram.
Honestly, throwing was the most fun event to photograph. Maybe it was because it was the first event I took photos of, or because it was very action packed. I had to get a little lucky with my shots, as my camera can't do high speed bursts, but I still found it really fun.
Next meet I will definitely try to get more pictures of throws.
I didn't get many photos of high jump, as I went there a little late after many people already got out. Also, many of the shots had focus issues, as I had to prefocus on the bar, further reducing the shots. These are the few that were good enough.
I am grouping all of the regular, relay, and hurdle races together, as they all boil down to the same thing: running. Also, I didn't have enough pictures of hurdles and relays to put them into different categories.
I don't have much to say for this category, just shots I couldn't fit anywhere else. First photo is by Keado Frederick.
That's all of the good shots I took. Overall, I took around 350 shots, and could only use about 100 which were in focus and were interesting. I then narrowed that down further to only the most interesting ones. So if you don't see a photo of yourself here, even though I took some of you during the meet, you know why.
Even though this time I didn't do well athletically, I had a lot of fun making new friends. I ended up passing the camera to them while I did my running events, and it was fun teaching them how to take photos, and then seeing what they could create.
Here's Hank Young, Keado Frederick (behind the camera), and I waiting for our dinner, which ended up being a large pizza and some breadsticks.
